Hamilton, PhD Enrollment: 4-8   Share | Join us for a unique experience with an instructional tour documenting the diversity of frogs, lizards, snakes, and insects with macro photography in the Amazon Rainforest. This workshop will focus on methods for working with wildlife, creativity, photographic equipment and digital photography technique, as well as scientific and environmental applications of photography. We believe that photography is a central means for both documenting biological diversity and conveying the natural beauty and value of nature to the world. For the scientifically inclined, we will offer instruction in photographic methods in herpetology and entomology. Come with us for this once in a lifetime adventure in a wild corner of the wildest ecosystem on Earth: the Amazon Rainforest. We hold our workshops at the world renowned Tiputini Biodiversity Station in the heart of Amazonian Ecuador. Tiputini holds some of the greatest biological diversity on earth, and you will have the opportunity of photograph and/or take video of hundreds of species of reptile, amphibian and insect, along with macaws, toucans, 12 species of monkeys, and many other forest dwellers. We will have access to thousands of hectares of wild rainforest and miles of river systems to explore by foot, vehicle and boat. We will work in the field and studio, on trail and river, and have opportunities to photograph morning, noon, and night. You will be provided with green and comfortable accommodations. Expeditions are led by Paul S. Hamilton, PhD. Paul is an ecologist who applies photography in both scientific and artistic realms. His work has been featured in dozens of publications, and his artwork is displayed in the homes of over 100 clients. He has been traveling to and capturing images of Ecuador for the past 12 years. These workshops are best suited to intermediate to advanced and professional photographers. Beginner-level photographers may participate, but will be best served by taking an optional day-long crash course in Quito before the trip departs for the rainforest (contact us for details). Current students may receive college credit through their own institutions as well as a discount on workshop fees. Best of all, all proceeds from your registration fees go back into our organization to help with our important work in conservation ecology. Our Galapagos experience offers unbeatable opportunities for spending time with some of the most outlandish creatures in the world. With our small group sizes, decades of instructional expertise, and scientific perspective, we offer peerless educational benefits to participants. You will fly to Quito, Ecuador, spend a quick night and then head off for the islands. Once arrived on the Galápagos, you will visit the Charles Darwin Research Station with great close up possibilities of giant Galápagos tortoises and other unique island fauna. After spending the first night in Puerto Lopez, the next 8 days will be spent on board the Samba, a tourist superior yacht with all the amenities you might expect. Get prepared for innumerable opportunities for capturing spectacular images of iconic Galápagos species, such as giant tortoises, Darwin's finches, three species of boobies, marine iguanas, pelicans, sea lions, frigate birds, albatross, tropic birds, Sally Lightfoot crabs, ghost crabs, Galápagos herons and more. Paul is an evolutionary ecologist who applies photography to both scientific and artistic realms. His work has been featured in hundreds of print and online publications, including those of National Geographic, New Scientist, Nature Magazine, and The Guardian, among many others. His artwork is also displayed in the homes of over 100 clients. Trained in evolutionary ecology, with 15 years of university teaching experience, and respected for his patience with subjects and students alike, he is uniquely suited for teaching the natural history of the Galapagos. He has been traveling to and capturing images of Ecuador for the past 10 years. Paul will also be offering dSLR video instruction to those interested. Michael has been working as a photographer for 30 years. His images of the natural world have been published by National Geographic Publications, Audubon, Sierra Club, Eastman Kodak, Oxford Scientific Films, and literally hundreds of other book, calendar, and paper products world-wide. Alamos Workshop : Desert to Rainforest: Alamos, Mexico Photography Workshop September 29-October 8, 2012 September 28-October 7, 2013 Subjects: Gila Monsters, Macaws, Desert Tortoises, Magpie Jays, Landscapes, Colonial Alamos,and more. Hamilton, PhD Enrollment: 4-10   Share | Join us in the tropical forests in the mountains of Alamos, Mexico, for a wonderful opportunity to photograph an amazing variety of subjects: black-throated magpie jays and military macaws are some of the better representatives from the avian contingent. The reptiles are strongly represented in the area, with desert tortoises, indigo snakes, and Mexican beaded lizards being just some of the highlights. Several rare and endangered amphibians are also to be found, such as the Tarahumara frog and barking frog. Jaguars are seen in the area, and there is a small chance of seeing one. The Alamos region of Sonora, Mexico is one of the most unique in all of North America. It is the center of the transition from northern deserts to southern rainforests. The forests at Alamos, called Tropical Deciduous Forests, have two lives. In the wet season, the flora and climate are that of a rainforest – green and visually diverse. In the dry season, they are that of a desert. Our workshop runs in the beginning of October, at the tail end of the wet season, while animal activity is still high and the vegetation is still lush,  but while the temperature and humidity are dropping, making for a more comfortable setting for shooting. We will be shooting primarily on the reserve run by the group Nature and Culture International, which provides a safe atmosphere and local guides. Our itinerary will start in Tucson, Arizona, where transport will take us to Alamos. Our first two nights will be in an ecotour lodge in colonial Alamos, the next six days will be spent up in the wild mountains on the edge of the Sierra Madre Mountains on ranch houses. Our final night will be spent again in Alamos to have a send off social and chance to share some of your best work. Workshops are led and instructed by Paul S. Hamilton, PhD, a biologist and photographer who has worked in northern Mexico and the southwestern U.S. for 20 years. His work is represented in dozens of print publications, and hundreds of online sources, and his prints are hanging in the homes of over 100 clients. He will work with you on finding and handling animals (although some animals such as venomous snakes will only be handled by him), flash and macro lens techniques, photographing animals in landscapes, dSLR video (for those interested), and natural history of the Alamos region. Workshops are geared towards intermediate to professional level photographers, although anyone may join. However, for the less experienced, we can offer a 1-3 day pre-workshop in Tucson, either for small groups or as individual instruction. Contact us for details.
